The Verkuilen Building project, meanwhile, involves other moving parts as county officials have reassessed its deployment of Health Department facilities, resulting in moving the main Health Department building, the Mount Clemens Health Center, and consolidating the two south-end health centers into one. The facility will be designed next year, and most of the spending will take place in 20, with completion in 2028. The jail project includes demolition of 78,000-square-feet the existing Sheriff’s offices, excluding the tower, construction of a new, four-level Central Intake and Assessment Center and renovation of 28,000-square feet. The county also will contribute some $50 million in general funds, drawing from its fund balance double that amount. Through lobbying efforts, the county also received a $25 million grant for the Verkuilen project and $40 million for the jail project. The county, like counties throughout the country, received American Rescue Plan dollars, over $170 million, to go toward the jail and the public works projects.
